An Act to provide an Endowment in Land for the Public Museum at Auckland.
Preamble.
WHEREAS the society known as the Auckland Institute and Museum, incorporated as a branch society with the New Zealand Institute under the provisions of “The New Zealand Institute Act, 1867,”
has established a public museum in the City of Auckland, and it is desirable to promote the study and cultivation of the various departments of science and art by providing an endowment for the said museum:
Be it therefore enacted by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
1 Short Title.
The Short Title of this Act is “The Auckland Museum Endowment Act, 1882.”
2 Governor may by notice gazetted set aside lands as an endowment for the Auckland Museum.
The Governor may from time to time select and set aside, from the Crown lands situate within the Auckland Land District, such block or blocks of land as he may deem fit, not exceeding in value the sum of ten thousand pounds in the whole, to be classified under the provisions of “The Land Act, 1877,”
as an endowment for the Auckland Museum; and shall notify in the Gazette that such lands have been so set aside.
3 Land to be dealt with under “Land Act, 1877.”
The said land shall, notwithstanding such setting apart, be dealt with as waste lands of the Crown, and as such shall be subject in all respects to the provisions of “The Land Act, 1877,”
and to the Schedules thereto, and to the provisions of any Act amending the same, so far as the said Acts and Schedules are applicable to and in force within the Auckland Land District.
4 Rents and proceeds of sales to be paid to Trustees.
All rents and profits derived from the said land shall, after educting the cost of survey and administration, be handed over from time to time to three Trustees, to be appointed by the Council of the said Auckland Institute and Museum, and approved of by the Governor, to be applied by them to the purposes of the said Museum.
All money received for the sale of the said land, not exceeding in the whole ten thousand pounds, shall be from time to time paid over to the Board, to be invested by them upon mortgage of freehold lands in New Zealand, or in stocks, bonds, bills, or debentures of the Government of the Colony of New Zealand, with power to the Board from time to time to vary investments.
5 Accounts of said revenues to be furnished for audit.
The Trustees shall keep full and true accounts of all their receipts and expenditure under this Act, and shall submit the said accounts to such audit and inspection as may from time to time be required under “The Public Revenues Act, 1878,”
and shall furnish such reports, as to the administration of this Act, as the Governor may require of them.
6 Yearly statement of receipts and expenditure to be sent to the Minister of Lands.
The Council of the said Auckland Institute and Museum shall send to the Minister of Lands, before the thirty-first day of March in every year, a duly certified statement of its receipts and expenditure during the year ending the thirty-first day of December preceding the date of such report.
