This Act may be cited as the Whakatane District Council Empowering Act 1987.

For the avoidance of doubt it is hereby delared that, notwithstanding anything in any enactment or rule of law, the Whakatane District Council is authorised and empowered to expend, for the purposes of recovery within its district from the earthquake which occurred on the 2nd day of March 1987 and the aftershocks, such amount of money (not exceeding a total sum of $500,000) as it thinks fit from the Council’s Harbour Capital Expenditure Reserve Fund, being the fund established pursuant to clause 20 of the Order in Council uniting the Whakatane County and Whakatane Borough and dissolving the Whakatane Harbour Board published in Gazette, 1976, Volume I, at page 688.
