An Act to amend the Counties Act, 1908.
BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
1 Short Title.
This Act may be cited as the Counties Amendment Act, 1908.
2 Section 59 of Counties Act amended.
(1.)
Notwithstanding anything in section fifty-nine of the Counties Act, 1908, the Governor may from time to time, on the resolution of the Council of any county, by Order in Council gazetted, increase the number of members of the Council of such county to any number not exceeding twelve, and adjust the representation in the Council of the several ridings of that county accordingly.
(2.)
Every such Order in Council shall come into force only at the next general election of the Council after the gazetting of the Order, except in so far as may be necessary for preparing any roll or otherwise providing for that election.
3 Section 19 of Counties Act amended.
Section nineteen of the said Act is hereby amended by omitting the word “nine”
from subsection two thereof, and substituting the word “twelve.”
4 Section 23 of Counties Act amended.
Section twenty-three of the said Act is hereby amended by adding thereto the following proviso:—
“Provided that the Governor in Council may from time to time, by Order in Council gazetted, authorise the Council of any county specified in that Order to increase the number of ridings in that county to any number not exceeding twelve; and while any such Order in Council remains in force and unrevoked the Council may act in pursuance thereof.”
