The Parliament of New Zealand enacts as follows:
1 Title

(1) This Act is the Sale of Liquor Amendment Act 2001.
(2) In this Act, the Sale of Liquor Act 1989 is called
“the principal Act”
.
2 Commencement
This Act comes into force on the day after the date on which it receives the Royal assent.
3 Term of office of members of Authority

(1) Section 86 of the principal Act is amended by repealing subsection (1), and substituting the following subsections:
“(1) Except as otherwise provided in this Act, a member of the Licensing Authority holds office for a term stated by the Governor-General on his or her appointment. A member may be reappointed.
“(1A) Except as provided in subsection (1B), the term stated must be 5 years.

“(1B) The term stated may be less than 5 years if—
-
“(a) at the time of the appointment concerned—
“(i) 2 or 3 members hold office; and
“(ii) each of them was appointed for a term of 5 years; and
“(b) only 1 member is appointed at that time.”
