This Supplementary Order Paper (SOP) amends SOP No 106 amending the Resource Management (Enabling Housing Supply and Other Matters) Amendment Bill. The National Policy Statement for Urban Development 2020 (NPS-UD) does not currently recognise sufficiently that we need to provide for environmental wellbeing in our cities and that healthy cities depend on a healthy natural environment. This SOP seeks changes to the requirements in the Medium Density Residential Standards (MDRS) for minimum landscaped area and would require a minimum 35 percent of a site to be planted, for example, with grass, shrubs, or tree canopy. This SOP also seeks to amend the new objectives and policies to support the MDRS and ensure that councils consider the adequacy of open and green spaces and how to encourage retention of urban trees as they develop an intensification planning instrument.
