The Parliament of New Zealand enacts as follows:
1 Title
-
(1) This Act is the Burial and Cremation Amendment Act 2003.
(2) In this Act, the Burial and Cremation Act 1964 is called
“the principal Act”
.
2 Commencement
This Act comes into force on the day after the date on which it receives the Royal assent.
3 Burial of members of Her Majesty's Forces, etc
Section 15(2) of the principal Act is amended by omitting the words
“Minister of Internal Affairs”
, and substituting the words“Minister of Veterans' Affairs”
.
4 Inspection of cemeteries
Section 52 of the principal Act is amended by repealing subsection (1), and substituting the following subsection:

“(1) An employee of the Public Service appointed by the Minister for the purpose, or any person designated as a Health Protection Officer under the Health Act 1956, may inspect any cemetery or any portion of a cemetery exclusively set apart for any denomination in order to—
“(a) ascertain the state and condition of it; and
“(b) examine the accounts of receipts and expenditure in relation to it; and
“(c) if regulations or bylaws in relation to it have been made under this Act, ascertain whether the regulations or bylaws are being observed and complied with.”
