An Act to amend “The New Zealand Law Society Act, 1869.”
Preamble.
WHEREAS it is expedient to extend the provisions of “The New Zealand Law Society Act, 1869:”
Be it therefore enacted by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
1 Short Title.
The Short Title of this Act shall be “The New Zealand Law Society Act 1869 Amendment Act, 1877.”
2 Council of the Society. Its powers.
It shall be lawful for the members of the Society in any district of the Supreme Court, or for a majority of such members, to elect a President, Vice-President, and members of a Council of the Society within such district, who shall have within such district the like powers as are conferred upon the Council of the New Zealand Law Society by “The New Zealand Law Society Act, 1869.”
3 Powers of members of the Society.
The members of the Society in any such district associated as aforesaid at any general meeting, or such of them as shall be then present, shall have full power, by a resolution of such members or a majority of them, to ordain and make such by-laws, rules, and orders as the New Zealand Law Society at any general meeting under the provisions of “The New Zealand Law Society Act, 1869,”
have power to ordain and make, so as the same be not contrary or repugnant to the by-laws, rules, and orders of the New Zealand Law Society; and within such district such by-laws, rules, and orders shall have full force and effect as if the same had been made and ordained by the New Zealand Law Society under the provisions and in the manner prescribed by the said Act.
4 Appeal.
Any member of any district Society who may be aggrieved by the decision of such Society in any matter affecting such member may appeal from such decision to the Council of the New Zealand Law Society; and such appeal shall be considered and heard by such Council in such manner as such Council shall by regulations in that behalf direct, and the decision of such Council shall be final and conclusive.
5 In case of vacancy Governor may appoint President.
It shall be lawful for the Governor, by warrant under his hand, to appoint the President of the New Zealand Law Society whenever the office of such President has been vacant for a period of three months.
