An Act to amend the Law relating to Law Practitioners and the New Zealand Law Society.
BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
1 Short Title.
The Short Title of this Act is “The Law Practitioners and New Zealand Law Society Acts Amendment Act, 1896.”
2 Candidates of either sex.
Candidates for admission as barristers or solicitors may be of either sex.
AS TO THE NEW ZEALAND LAW SOCIETY
3 Constitution of Council modified.
The constitution of the Council of the New Zealand Law Society is hereby modified in manner following, that is to say,—
(1.)
Each of the respective District Law Societies for the Northern District, the Wellington District, the Canterbury District, and the Otago and Southland District shall elect two members of the Council; and
(2.)
Each of the respective District Law Societies for the other districts throughout the colony shall elect one member of the Council.
4 First election of members.
The first election of members of the Council under this Act shall be held on a day to be appointed by the Governor, and on that day the members then in office shall cease to hold office.
5 Term of office.
The member elected by each District Law Society at the first election under this Act shall hold office until the date of the first ensuing annual meeting of such society, on which date, and annually thereafter, a successor shall be elected:
Provided that if such society at any time fails to duly elect a member the District Council of such society may do so in its stead, and the fact that such District Council so elects shall be sufficient evidence of its authority so to do.
6 Re-election.
Every retiring member shall be eligible for re-election.
7 Meetings of Council.
The Council may hold meetings at such time and place as it thinks fit, but shall hold a meeting in Wellington on a date to be fixed by the President, being within fourteen days after the date appointed for the commencement of each half-yearly sitting of the Court of Appeal.
8 Meetings of Law Society.
The Council may convene meetings of the New Zealand Law Society, and fix the time and place of meeting thereof.
GENERAL
9 Acts and rules modified or repealed.
“The Law Practitioners Act, 1882,”
“The New Zealand Law Society’s Act, 1869,”
and all other Acts and the respective rules thereunder that are in any way in conflict with this Act are hereby modified or repealed in so far as such conflict exists, but not further or otherwise.
