Contents
An Act to Amend the New Zealand University Act, 1908.
BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
1 Short Title.
This Act may be cited as the New Zealand University Amendment Act, 1950, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the New Zealand University Act, 1908 (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act).
2 Unauthorized expenditure of Senate.
(1)
The principal Act is hereby amended by inserting, after section twenty-nine, the following section:—
“29A
The Senate may in any year expend out of the general account of the New Zealand University for purposes not authorized by any law for the time being in force any sum or sums not exceeding in the aggregate five hundred pounds.”
(2)
The following enactments are hereby repealed:—
(a)
Section forty-two of the Finance Act, 1925:
(b)
Subsection four of section thirty-seven of the Victoria University College Act, 1933:

(c)
Subsection five of section thirty-six of the Canter-bury University College Act, 1933.
3 University National Scholarships.
(1)
Section thirteen of the New Zealand University Amendment Act, 1914, is hereby amended as follows:—
(a)
By omitting from paragraph (d) the words “three years”
, and substituting the words “four years”

(b)
By omitting from paragraph (e), as set out in section three of the New Zealand University Amendment Act, 1923, and amended by paragraph (a.) of subsection one of section sixty-two of the Statutes Amendment Act, 1946, the words “forty-five pounds”
, and substituting the words “seventy pounds”
:
(c)
By repealing paragraph (l), and substituting the following paragraph:—
“(l)
The University National Scholarship shall not be tenable with a University Junior Scholarship or with a Taranaki Scholarship, but it may be held with a scholarship or bursary not awarded by the University of New Zealand if the holder receives only so much of the emoluments of the other scholarship or bursary as, when added to the amount payable to him in respect of his University National Scholarship, does not exceed the sum of one hundred and sixty-five pounds in any year.”
Repeal.
(2)
Paragraphs (a) and (c) of subsection one of section sixty-two of the Statutes Amendment Act, 1946, are hereby repealed.
4 Lodging allowances and travelling expenses for holders of University National Scholarships.
(1)
Section fifteen of the New Zealand University Amendment Act, 1914, is hereby amended as follows:—
(a)
By omitting from subsection one, as amended by subsection two of section sixty-two of the Statutes Amendment Act, 1946, the words “forty-five pounds”
, and substituting the words “forty pounds”

By repealing subsection two.
Repeal.
(2)
Subsection two of section sixty-two of the Statutes Amendment Act, 1946, is hereby repealed.
5 Taranaki Scholarships.
(1)
Section seventeen of the New Zealand University Amendment Act, 1914, is hereby amended by repealing paragraph (d), and substituting the following paragraph:—
“(d)
The term of a scholarship shall be three years if the holder so Jong fulfils the conditions hereinafter prescribed; and there shall be payable to the holder of a scholarship such annual sum, being not less than seventy pounds, as the Senate may from time to time prescribe by statute in addition to the tuition fees payable by the holder at the University college or agricultural college which he for the time being attends in connection with any course of study pursued by him with the approval of the Senate:
“Provided that, if the scholar has satisfactorily fulfilled the conditions herein-after prescribed, the Senate may, at its discretion, extend the tenure of a scholarship for two additional years in the case of a scholar who has entered upon a course of study in medicine, engineering, or dentistry, and for one additional year in the case of any other scholar:
“Provided also that, except in special cases approved by the Senate, not more than one year’s fees shall be payable with respect to any subject at the same grade.”
(2)
Section seventeen of the New Zealand University Amendment Act, 1914, is hereby further amended by repealing paragraph (g), and substituting the following paragraph:—
“(g)
The Taranaki Scholarship shall not be tenable with a University Junior Scholarship or with a University National Scholarship, but it may be held with a scholarship or bursary not awarded by the University of New Zealand if the holder receives only so much of the emoluments of the other scholarship or bursary as, when added to the amount payable to him in respect of his Taranaki Scholarship, does not exceed the sum of one hundred and ten pounds in any year.”

Paragraph (a) of subsection three of section sixty-two of the Statutes Amendment Act, 1946, is hereby repealed.
