An Act to amend the Civil Aviation Act 1964
BE IT ENACTED by the General Assembly of New Zealand in Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
1 Short Title
This Act may be cited as the Civil Aviation Amendment Act 1969, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the Civil Aviation Act 1964 (hereinafter referred to as the principal Act).
2 Interpretation
Section 2 of the principal Act is hereby amended by repealing the definition of “aircraft”
, and substituting the following definition:
“‘Aircraft’ means any machine that can derive support in the atmosphere from the reactions of the air otherwise than by the reactions of the air against the surface of the earth:”.
3 Principal functions of the department
Section 5 of the principal Act is hereby amended by inserting in subsection (1), after paragraph (d), the following paragraph:
“(dd)
To be responsible for search and rescue operations in respect of any civil aircraft and the crew and passengers of any such aircraft:”.
4 Office of Air Accidents Investigation
Section 18 of the principal Act is hereby amended—
(a)
By omitting from subsections (1) and (2) the words “Accidents Investigation Branch”
, and substituting in each case the words “Office of Air Accidents Investigation”

(b)
By inserting in subsections (2) and (3), after the words “Chief Inspector of”
, in each case the word “Air”
.
5 Regulations
Section 29 of the principal Act is hereby amended by inserting in subsection 4, after the words “for the purpose of ensuring the safety of aircraft”
, the words “or, after consultation with such persons interested in civil aviation as the Minister may direct, for the purpose of abating the noise made by aircraft”
.
